What will you do with your time now? Addiction has left a vacuum in your life, and now is the time for you to fill that vacuum with something constructive, engaging and enjoyable. Find a new hobby, start volunteering, pursue education that will help you further your career, or do anything else which will set your new life on the right path.

This does work for some, I talked to a homeless guy recently that said the best thing his parents ever did for him was to kick him out of the house because it forced him to stop using drugs. For me personally, enabling means not doing anything for my son that he is capable of doing for himself. There can be a lot of gray area here; it changes from day to day. Explore the concept of enabling by listening to others in meetings or reading about it on blogs. What does enabling mean in your situation? How can you support him/her without making it “easy” for them to continue using. Addicts need to remember that they are capable human beings when given the opportunity. If we do everything for them, we rob them of feeling good about themselves. Most likely their sense of self worth has taken a big hit with all they’ve been through so allowing them to pick up the pieces on their own as much as possible will show them they can succeed.

Distractions and Replacement – If a stressful situation can’t be avoided, distractions are a great way to overcome urges. Create a list of healthy distractions that you can refer to if a craving is overwhelming so you don’t have to think too much. Distractions can be anything from a brisk walk or run, swimming laps, calling a friend, reading a book or cleaning. Choosing an exercise, offers the added bonus from a boost of endorphins, which will help to reduce the stress and anxiety you may be feeling. Practice mindful meditation to find a peaceful resolution. Visualize yourself going through the motions of your distraction to help you to get started. This will ease any anxiety and fear that can trigger cravings. Keep a positive attitude, and understand that with practice, healthy habits will override negative ones.

Love for the opiate addict usually blinds those close to him/her. Traditional forms of compassion, care and concern become liabilities. I see many cases where family continues to provide shelter, food and money to an active opiate addict. These behaviors enable an opiate addict to continue down a path of self-destruction.

Optimism and gratitude. These qualities have to do with being able to roll with the punches and cope with the ups and downs that life and recovery will certainly dole out. Happy people manage to find opportunities, even in difficult or negative situations. They may mourn and grieve losses, but they don’t lose hope or predict negative outcomes. Studies indicate that optimistic thinking can help people feel better mentally, emotionally and physically. If you work on integrating these seven principles into your life, as you continue to work your program, you just may find that relapse prevention is a positive and fun part of being sober.
